Maintaining the humidifier in your Colorado Springs Home

natural water drop textureIf you have a humidifier in your Colorado Springs home, chances are you have not done much to maintain it let alone change its settings since you moved into your home.  Many people do not realize that humidifiers require maintenance just like everything else in homes do.

If it seems like the humidifier in your home is not working properly, you should have it looked at to make sure it does not need a new filter.  Humidifiers with dirty or clogged filters are not going to operate as well so ensuring your home’s humidifier is equipped with a clean filter is important.  Most filters for humidifiers can be purchased at your local hardware store but some filters have to be ordered online.

During the summer months, when you are running your air conditioner, your humidifier should be turned off.  During the winter months, it is a good idea to adjust your humidifier depending on the weather.  If you have noticed condensation on the interior of your windows during the cold months, that is due to your humidifier.  If you are shocking everything you touch in your home, the air in your home may be too dry.  You can adjust your humidifier down on cold, snowy days since there is more moisture in the air and then adjust your humidifier back up for dry, cold days.

Don’t have a whole house humidifier?  It can usually be added later to your furnace for around $500.  If the air in your home is too dry, you may want to consider having a whole house humidifier installed.  Keep in mind, humidifiers can impact materials in your home such as wood flooring.

To get the most out of your humidifier, don’t just leave it on one setting all year long.  Take time to maintain it and adjust levels accordingly, depending on the weather.
